What are those fancy pools called?

The pools that appear to spill into the horizon are infinity pools, also known as vanishing edge, negative edge or zero edge pools. The effect comes from a wall set fractionally below the waterline, allowing water to fall into a concealed catch basin and be recirculated. A related type is the perimeter overflow pool, where water spills evenly on all sides into a hidden channel, producing a mirror-still surface. Both require precise structural levelling and hydraulic design to work correctly.

Which type of pool lasts the longest?

In a bespoke project, longevity is decided less by the material than by the quality of the engineering behind it. Reinforced concrete offers the longest structural life, but only when the ground conditions, reinforcement and waterproofing have been calculated for that specific site. A well-engineered concrete pool can outlive the building it sits beside, while a poorly executed one may show movement within a few years. This is why structural studies precede design decisions on every project we take on.

How big is a luxury pool?

There is no standard size, and that is the point. A typical private pool measures around eight to ten metres in length, while bespoke projects commonly range from twelve to twenty-five metres depending on the site. Dedicated lap pools are usually twenty-five metres. What defines a luxury pool is proportion rather than scale: dimensions are derived from the architecture, the sightlines and the way the space will be used, not from a catalogue of standard sizes.

What is the strongest inground pool?

Reinforced concrete sprayed as gunite or shotcrete over a steel rebar cage is the strongest construction method available. The steel grid carries tensile load while the sprayed concrete resists compression, producing a monolithic shell capable of handling hydrostatic pressure, soil movement and the additional loads of elevated or cantilevered designs. It is the only method suitable for infinity edges, structural overhangs and pools built on sloping or unstable ground, which is why it remains standard for architectural projects.

Behind the calm of a finished pool lies a construction process measured in millimetres. Swimming pool construction at this level begins with a ground study and excavation, moves through the reinforced concrete shell, waterproofing and hydraulic installation and ends with the slow, exacting work of cladding and finishing.

Each phase is supervised by the same team that drew it, because a drawing is only ever as good as the hands that build it.
